Dune Windtrap cross-section

This is my concept art design for the interior of a windtrap from Dune. I love cross section illustrations so I always enjoy getting the chance to do one : )

I agonised a lot over how the windtrap should work, trying to come up with something both high tech but also Dune-ish. To me, Dune tech is very robust and highly evolved, and it should feel elegant and simple despite being extremely advanced.

The book gives a vague description of windtrap capturing wind into underground chambers where water is collected. The only issue with that is that my requirement was that this windtrap needed to provide both power and water, and if you're piping wind into underground chambers, you're almost certainly ruining the energy you could be extracting from it for power, so I decided to instead have the wind flow right through the trap. For power extraction I instead use the fast wind to carry away charged particles ala a vaneless ion wind generator.

For water extraction I use a zeolite absorption/desorption cycle where the hot steam is dumped into an underground chamber for condensing. This fulfills the book's thing about having an underground cooling chamber too...
